INTRODUCTION AND ACCEPTANCE

The John Templeton Foundation (“JTF”) recognizes the importance of your privacy, and we are committed to protecting any data that allows us to directly or indirectly identify you (“personally identifiable Information”). As part of JTF’s normal operations we collect and, in some cases, disclose information about you. This Privacy Policy is meant to inform users of JTF’s website and portals about what information we collect, how we will treat this information, and what options you have to direct our activities.

By using JTF’s website and portals, you agree to the terms of our Privacy Policy.

All references in this Privacy Policy to “we,” “us,” or “our” shall refer to JTF and its subsidiaries. All references in this Privacy Policy to “you” or “your” shall refer to the users of JTF’s website and portals.

This Privacy Policy contains some information which applies to European users only. “European users” are individual users based in the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland. Other privacy policies, as notified to you, may apply if you use other products or services we provide.

  • Profile Data includes your username and password, if you have created an account;
  • Usage Data includes information about how you use our website and our portals and also how you engage with our content;
  • Mailing Data includes mailings between us (including date/timestamp of mailing, content of mailing, language of mailing, topic categories);
  • Communications Data includes your preferences in receiving communications from us and, where applicable, your opt-in to receive such communications; and
  • Identity and Contact Data of individuals who work on, or benefit from, our grants, including, where applicable, affiliation details with relevant institution(s).

JTF uses MailChimp as the platform to distribute emails to you and others (including periodic updates about our work or responding to requests from you for information).  MailChimp has rights to use the personally identifiable information we provide to them about you as described on their website at:  https://mailchimp.com (with the privacy policy located at https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/).

YOUR RIGHTS / CORRECTING YOUR PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION

You can access some of your personally identifiable information that we collect on our website or portals by logging in and viewing your account, or by contacting JTF staff.

If you discover errors in your personally identifiable information on our website or portals, generally you can correct it by editing your account, or by contacting JTF staff. We ask individual users to identify themselves and the information requested to be accessed, corrected, or removed before processing such requests, and we may decline to process requests that are unreasonably repetitive or systematic, require disproportionate technical effort, jeopardize the privacy of others, or would be extremely impractical (for instance, requests concerning information residing on backup tapes), or for which access is not otherwise required.

MARKETING

In relation to marketing communications such as co-funding opportunity and campaign emails, we will provide you with an “opt in” or “opt out” mechanism depending on where you are located when we collect your personally identifiable information. An “opt in” mechanism will provide you the opportunity to positively indicate that you would like to receive our marketing communications and we will not send you any unless you have “opted in”. An “opt out” mechanism (e.g., “unsubscribe”) will provide you the opportunity to indicate that you do not want us to send you such communications, and if you “opt out” we will not send you any.

You may opt out of marketing-related emails by clicking on a link at the bottom of each such email, or by contacting us using the contact details below (Contact Details). You may continue to receive service-related and other non-marketing emails.

We will get your express opt-in consent before we share your personally identifiable information with any third party for marketing purposes.

CHILDREN

Our website is not intended for or directed to children under the age of 13 and so we do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 13. If you are a parent or guardian of a minor and believe that we have collected, used, or disclosed such information, please contact us using the contact information below. If we have reason to believe that someone is underage and we have collected their personally identifiable information without proper consent, we will delete that information as soon as reasonably possible.

In addition, we may limit how we collect, use and store some of the information of European users between 13 and 16. In some cases, this means we will be unable to provide certain functionality to these users. THIRD-PARTY HOSTING

JTF contracts with a third-party to maintain and host the website and portals. Therefore, any information you submit on our website or portals, including personally identifiable information, will be placed and stored on a computer server maintained by this third-party host.

SECURITY

We have put in place technical and organizational security measures to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of your personally identifiable information. Presently, the website and portals utilize Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption technology for all private transmissions. In addition, we limit access to your personally identifiable information to those employees, agents, contractors and other third parties who have an organizational need to know. They will only process your personally identifiable information on our instructions, and they are subject to a duty of confidentiality.

CROSS BORDER DATA TRANSFERS

By using the website or portals, you consent to the processing, transfer and storage of your information in and to the United States and other countries, where you may not have the same rights as you do under your local law. HOW LONG WE RETAIN YOUR PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION

We will only retain your personally identifiable information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements. To determine the appropriate retention period for personally identifiable information, we consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personally identifiable information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorised use or disclosure of your personally identifiable information, the purposes for which we process your personally identifiable information and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, and the applicable legal requirements. We continually review what information we hold and will delete personally identifiable information which is no longer required.
