The project will ask the following questions: how do historical and contemporary Sunni kalam epistemologies approach the question of foundations? To what extent is recent theistic philosophical theology a useful model for Muslim theologians? And which contemporary philosophical approaches to meta-epistemology are most fruitful in advancing a philosophical theology responsive to the particularities of the Muslim tradition? In order to answer these questions, the project will produce original research that bridges the gap between Muslim kalam traditions and analytic theology, as well as facilitate greater intellectual exchange in this area. The concrete deliverables of the Beyond Foundationalism project will be as follows: two workshops leading to an international symposium; two monographs with recognized academic presses; a collected volume based on the international symposium; three journal articles in peer-reviewed journals; and conference presentations in the UK, Germany, USA and Turkey. The project will have an impact in moving forward academic scholarship in Muslim analytic theology, open up the field of philosophical theology to Muslim practitioners and enhance conversation between Christian, Jewish and Muslim philosophical theologians.
