The Science Friday Initiative (SFI) proposes the Science Friday Big Questions Digital Video Series, a two-year, $187,588 grant exploring the John Templeton Foundation’s Big Questions through the medium of short digital videos. SFI is the nonprofit producer of the public radio program Science Friday, the science and technology radio show hosted by Ira Flatow. Entering its 23rd year on the air, Science Friday has over 2.1 million listeners per week. SFI employs a transmedia approach for content distribution, and offers online articles and digital videos on sciencefriday.com. SFI will leverage its vast audience, its reputation as a trusted science and technology media organization, and its knowledge of producing engaging media to produce and distribute two collections of digital videos. Each collection will consist of approximately 12-20 minutes of total video time, covering selected JTF Big Questions. The videos will be featured on sciencefriday.com, promoted on-air and distributed via social media channels to 738,000 followers. The enduring impact of this project will be the result of an ongoing dialogue among the public at large: a well-informed public with the ability to form new insights, make good decisions based on their knowledge, and enjoy a richer quality of life as lifelong learners.
