The F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University advances teaching and research regarding the institutional arrangements that support free and prosperous societies. It is grounded in the recognition that these institutional arrangements significantly impact the economic, political, and moral character of society.
Inspired by a passage from F.A. Hayek’s Nobel address—“Nobody can be a great economist who is only an economistâ€â€”the work of the Hayek Program pays particular attention to the connections and relationships between economics and such other branches of the humane studies as law, politics, philosophy, and history. In so doing, it touches upon areas of interest within contemporary economics and political economy scholarship, including the entrepreneurial theory of the market process, law and economics, public choice and constitutional political economy, and the institutional analysis of social and economic development.
The Hayek Program seeks to advance a progressive research program in political economy through faculty research and publication, graduate fellowships that function as academic apprenticeships, as well as workshops, conferences, and seminars with faculty and students from GMU and other universities.
