The Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is seeking a planning grant to intentionally position the program to expand its work through greater engagement of diverse Christian communities with science. This work is part of an intentional multi-year strategic planning effort by the DoSER program to respond to changing religious landscapes, developing scientific advancements, and expanding engagement opportunities to broaden and deepen the science and religion dialogue.
Much of the work at the intersections of science and religion has reflected primarily white Christian perspectives. However, the priorities, concerns, and perspectives of Black, Hispanic, Asian, Indigenous, and other Christian communities may not be the same as those of white communities, even those that share the same faith background. This is particularly important because many of these communities have been historically marginalized by and under-represented in the sciences. By intentionally working with diverse Christian communities to develop strategies and resources for engaging these perspectives in the science and religion dialogue, we will provide opportunities for new communities to explore big questions of life and meaning and will enrich and deepen the science-religion dialogue as a whole.
This grant will support a reflective and responsive process of outreach and co-development of projects with diverse Christian communities, with an initial focus on Black and Hispanic communities.
This grant will result in a strategic plan for DoSER’s engagement with diverse Christian communities for the next 10+ years as well as the identification of at least one major project, with associated grant proposal to JTF and co-funders, focused on increasing the involvement of non-white Christian communities and perspectives in conversations and projects at the intersection of science, ethics, and religion.
