The John Templeton Foundation is pleased to announce a new funding competition in the Character Virtue Development department, with a total of $15 million available for projects.
In the “Character Through Community” Request For Proposals (RFP), we seek to assist organizations that are well-positioned to strengthen their understanding and implementation of character development through communities of practice.
By “character,” we mean the thoughts, attitudes, and motivations that guide a person’s behavior. These qualities are sometimes called strengths of heart, mind, and will, and include virtues such as gratitude, generosity, curiosity, humility, and self-control.
By “communities of practice,” we mean groups that come together regularly to share knowledge, innovate, and solve problems. It is in such communities and in close relationships that people can grow and strengthen qualities of character.
“The goal of this initiative is to strengthen and empower groups with an interest in character development to carry out this important work,” said Sarah Clement, Interim Vice President of Programs and Senior Director of the Character Virtue Development department. “Our work is grounded in the view that the cultivation of good character can help all of us build flourishing lives, but this is not possible without strong character-focused programs and institutions.”
For the purposes of this funding competition, we are most interested in groups that impact at least 1,000 individuals. Communities from the Character Virtue Development department’s key audiences — education, faith communities, parent/primary caregiver organizations, and organizations in the city of Philadelphia — are especially encouraged to apply.
Applications should be submitted through the Foundation’s application portal. Submissions are due by June 11, 2021.
