Philosophical sufism needs a major rehabilitation in the present age. Today, when Muslims conceive of sufism, they often see it as a set of practical character development / soul refinement practices, a science concerned with the means by which to engage in spiritual “wayfaring” (suluk) on the path to God. While suluk is no doubt integral to sufism, so too is the sufi angle towards epistemology, ontology, cosmology, theology, and theosophy (what for ease of discussion we will refer to as tasawwuf). We’re interested in exploring the feasibility of a “spiritualized”/tasawwuf-oriented epistemology as a framework through which we can search for new solutions to the unique problems posed by the age. We believe that, for Muslims, law, theology, and spirituality need not exist in tension. Rather, properly understood and articulated in each age, they complement each other, and provide a holistic vision of man and his place in society and the universe more broadly.
