Two complementary programs of public engagement events at Arizona State University (ASU) are proposed that will address fields as diverse as “How can research address the Big Questions of science and philosophy,” "How can ethical and religious concerns guide gene editing?" and "How can religion and science together contribute to human flourishing?" Primary activities will be production of an annual Conference on Faith and Science (COFAS) focused on Christian perspectives, and a new multi-faith Conference on Religion, Ethics, and Science (CORES). Both of these conferences will be hosted on campuses of ASU within the metro Phoenix area. CORES will take place annually, beginning in February 2021. COFAS will immediately follow CORES to provide a second venue for speakers and participants who are interested specifically in addressing these topics from a Christian perspective. These conferences will take place in 2021 and 2022 and will engage university faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, clergy, and the general public through respectful, informed, and productive dialogue among eminent scholars. Such bridging dialogues on religion, ethics, and science are urgently needed in our increasingly polarized culture as we seek greater peace and understanding about these critical issues. Papers and recorded media will be posted online, broadcast, and incorporated into educational materials so as to greatly magnify the positive impact of these events. Relationships developed among the multiple partners and sponsors of the conferences may lead to the creation of a Consortium on Religion, Ethics, and Science to provide greater public awareness of the crucial interplay of these spheres of knowledge and practice. At the completion of the funding period, CORES and COFAS will provide another geographic center for these vital conversations by building and strengthening a global network of people and organizations with shared concerns and priorities.
