Marie Stopes International (MSI) is establishing a country program in Niger in response to a request from the Nigerien Ministry of Health (MoH) to increase the provision of family planning services in the country.
Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, has some of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the region, and the highest total fertility rate in the world leading to the fastest growing population. It is projected to be the second most populous nation in West Africa by 2050. Long term and permanent family planning use amongst married women of reproductive age is extremely low, at 0.5% of married women and condom use amongst married women appears to be non-existent; according to DHS data from both 2006 and 2012.
Family planning is a key component in the Health Development Plan and the Program for Economic and Social Development. Additionally, in 2013, the MoH and key stakeholders developed a National Action Plan for Family Planning (NAPFP) to scale up access to voluntary family planning services.
MSI’s global model of mobile clinical outreach, which has a proven track record of success in 26 countries, will deliver needed reproductive health education and family planning resources to those most in need across Niger.
