A Conversation with 2007 Templeton Prize Laureate Charles Taylor
Engaging themes raised in his forthcoming book A Secular Age, Harvard University Press
On
the morning of the second of May, Professor Charles Taylor, FBA, will formally
receive the 2007 Templeton Prize in private ceremony in Buckingham Palace.
Immediately afterward he will participate in a scholarly discussion at the
British Academy. This event will have special focus on themes and issues
raised in his forthcoming
book, A Secular Age to be published in September by Harvard University
Press (and for which bound galleys will be available to panelists in advance
and to attendees of the event). Charles Taylor has been recognized by the
distinguished judges of the Templeton Prize for his extraordinary
accomplishments advancing understanding in many areas of philosophical and
sociological research involving human self understanding and the study of
spiritual and ethical aspects of the trajectories of human cultures.
The
afternoon will draw together a set of specially invited Academy Fellows to
engage pressing questions of our time relating to the future of interactions
between traditional religious cultures and the largely secularized institutions
and cultures of modernity.
A
confirmed panel includes: Fellows of the British Academy (FBA) and other distinguished
guests – Professor Leszek Kolakowski, Professor David Martin, Lord Parekh, Lord Sutherland,
and Sir Jonathan Sacks.
The schedule for the event is as follows:
- 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. Informal buffet luncheon
- 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Discussion session
- Charles
Taylor will make overview remarks followed by panel member's comments at 10
minutes per panelist, with Professor Taylor responding to each in turn briefly.
The final 45 minutes will be devoted to an open discussion involving members of
the audience including Fellows of the Academy, invited special guests,
scholarly journal editors and media leaders.
