Hyung S. Choi, Ph.D.
Director, Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Hyung S. Choi is Director of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the John Templeton Foundation. He is primarily responsible for creating large-scale initiatives that engage big and foundational questions in the mathematical and physical sciences. He previously served as president of Innovative Research & Programs, Inc. He was director for research and programs in the natural sciences at the Metanexus Institute for four years and served as director of the Canyon Institute for Advanced Studies, an interdisciplinary research organization in Phoenix, Arizona. He also spent nearly a decade as professor of mathematical physics and philosophy of science at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
Hyung received both his M.Phil. and Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) and his M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary. Before moving to the United States in 1979, he studied undergraduate physics at Kyung-Hee University and theoretical particle physics at Seoul National University in South Korea.
A recipient of many honors and awards for research and teaching, Hyung’s areas of expertise include the foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum theory of light, and the philosophy of science. He is a member of the American Physical Society, American Mathematical Society, and the Chinese Philosophy Group of the American Philosophical Society. Hyung has been a visiting fellow at St. Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge and a Witherspoon Fellow at the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences in Berkeley, California.
